Observations
Vulcan Hotel, Central Otago
Graphite pencil on 100% cotton paper
The story
Built in 1869 in the heart of St Bathans, the Vulcan Hotel is a legendary survivor of the Central Otago gold rush. Constructed from mud brick and standing against decades of harsh high-country winters, it's kept lively by its famous resident ghost, 'Rose', said to haunt Room 1. This piece captures the character of its historic facade: raw earth, timber joinery, and the rugged, slightly eerie heritage of the haunted interior.
The series: Observations
A study of light and shadow, aged brickwork, and timber joinery. Recording the texture and craftsmanship of the structures still standing in our everyday landscape.
The drawing
Drawn in graphite on 100% cotton paper.
